ABACA WEAVING
Negros Island WovenCrafts(NIWO) is a social enterprise determined to preserve the abaca weaving traditions of Negros Oriental.Sinamay, a term referring to woven abaca, was the traditional clothing material of Filipinos until the introduction of cheaper fabrics.Because it lost its usefulness, many weavers went into other means of livelihood.
We in NIWO felt such a beautiful craft should not be lost and so in 2004 started to trade in abaca products.Today,NIWO contributes to the revival of weaving sinamay not only as a means of livelihood for the rural women of Negros but as a way of reviving the interests of many in the traditional crafts of weaving. We have also provided training to young weavers making sure the craft survives through time.
